Built in 1854 on former battlegrounds, the lakeview Swissotel Metropole was a World War II Red Cross base. Refurbished in the 1980s, it maintains its original exterior. Guests go up a grand staircase to the high ceilinged lobby, with chandeliers and grey stone columns.Le Grand Quai restaurant is decorated in Belle Epoque style with red and gold drapes, trompe d'oeil (eye trick) paintings and a chandelier. It serves traditional French cuisine, and guests can eat on the cobble square outside in the summer. The hotel's lobby bar has a grand piano and leather seating.
